Nokia N800 - Things I LOVE

Well here’s the 2nd part - why I LOVE my N800. When the first Internet Tablet was announced, I thought it was cool, but played with one at Fry’s a few times and couldn’t figure it out. When the N800 was announced, I did the same thing, and concluded I didn’t need one. But the more I read about and played with them, the more I wanted it. Then I finally got one, and it’s been bittersweet. I have a few gripes, but here’s the reasons this thing is awesome:
Mostly it’s awesome for the portability. I’m still trying to figure out who exactly it’s for. I think I’ve decided it’s 50-50 for tech geeks and general consumers. My mom could pick this thing up and make a video call, but probably would have trouble adding a repository and other things. However, it’s great to have something smaller than my laptop to carry around the house or have sitting on my desk at work.
I love using the internet on it. It’s absolutely a fantastic
experience. The hardware zoom buttons and full-screen mode could not
have been a better choice. It’s versatile, IT SUPPORTS MULTIPLE WINDOWS
(which could only be improved if they were tabs), it’s just plain fun
to use.
I love using IM on it. Seriously, this could not be a better IM device
(unless maybe it had a built-in QWERTY, which I’ve designed and will
post soon). Gtalk is built-in, and well. With a few finger-taps you can
pull up your contact list, make a video call, chat, make a voice call,
whatever. It’s just so easy. And I installed GAIM (for MSN/AIM) and
that works like a charm, too. This thing was built for IM. It’s got
discreet audio alerts (which isn’t something most companies (Nokia
included) usually do. Typically audio alerts from the factory are loud
and annoying.) and visual alerts.
Sounds - I have yet to change a single sound setting on this device,
other than silencing it. Usually any sort of electronic has the most
*annoying* sounds for different events on the device. Not so with the
N800. Everything is soft and non-abrasive. Again, a complete joy to
use.
Music - Between Canola, the built-in Music Player, and Orb, I love using this for music. The speakers are loud and crisp. I usually bring it in the bathroom while I shower in the mornings. It’s wonderful. And anyplace else you might want music.
Rhapsody - OMG if you haven’t used this on the N800, you’re only
hurting yourself. It’s free for a month and I guarantee you’ll buy it
after that. Seriously. It’s just amazing. I have yet to actually
explore/search the available library. They have GREAT preset playlists
that you can load up with 2 clicks and be enjoying music. Simplicity at
its finest.
Here’s my recommendation as to who this device is for: anyone who
spends too much time in front of the computer and is missing out on
nature and life. Seriously. The N800, in my opinion, is designed to
untether you. Where you would normally sit in front of your computer
all morning checking email and reading RSS and chatting with contacts,
you can take the N800 to your back porch or Starbucks or wherever and
do it there. It’s designed to get you away from your desk. And I love
it.

Do you always have to make your mom look like such a technology unaware person? :p Just kidding ya.
I would love to have an N800 but there’s no way I could benefit the internet on it, so it’s basically dumb to get one. Plus I’m not sure they will ever sell N800s around here. People are so excited about the slim Motorollas and Samsungs *starts banging my head against the wall*
Lol @ Rita. I didn’t know I’d mentioned my mom previously. She tries, really she does.
