I’ve gone ahead and installed OS2008 on my Nokia N800 ahead of the game using steps that have been widely published online. I’ve also decided to do a series of videos introducing you to the new OS on your old Tablet, to really show off the cool capabilities and new looks. The first step in this series is going to be a quick video of the Maps application bundled with the new OS.This Maps application is built into the new OS, so the only thing that N800 owners will need to do is download the actual maps. Luckily, this is really easy, thanks to a convenient menu where you pick which maps you want. However, that’s about the only “easy” thing about it. I have several complaints:1. The US is broken into 2 maps - East and West. There’s no way on the Tablet to know which of those, say, Texas is in (West, btw). Plus, the West map is 650MB, and the East one is over 700MB! It would be MUCH more convenient to have individual state maps, or at least 3-4 regional ones, with a list of what states are covered.

2. It took me nearly 5hrs to download the US West map over WiFi! That’s RIDICULOUS.

3. I’m going to mention again that the only subscription option is a stupid 3-year license! One of the great things about Nokia maps on my N95 is that I can purchase a license for anywhere between 7 days and 3 years. I love that flexibility. Why can’t we have that with the Tablet?

  1. Did you spray paint your N800 or is that a skin i can get some where ?

  2. @Bren - It is spraypaint. You can easily pop the faceplate of the N800 off to do whatever you’d like to it. I just used several layers of spraypaint, with no clearcoat afterwards (as I wanted the matte look). It is starting to wear off on the edges, but still obviously looks great.

  3. […] Ricky over at Tablet-Guru has gone ahead with the OS 2008 install hack that’s been floating around (in order to get Chinook on your N800, since it’s not been officially released for the N800 yet), and looks to be starting a series of review posts.  The first post is on the “Maps” functionality that comes built-in, here’s a quick excerpt: This Maps application is built into the new OS, so the only thing that N800 owners will need to do is download the actual maps.
