Nokia Beta Labs Releases Internet Tablet Video Converter
A new section has been added to the Nokia Beta Labs pages, featuring the first of many Internet Tablet applications, the Internet Tablet Video Converter. The timing could NOT be more perfect, as I just had a pretty poor experience with Konttori’s Media Converter the other day.
The new application can be downloaded here (Windows only for now, sorry Mac and Linux users) and you can provide direct feedback to the developers here.
The issue that I had with the Media Converter is the resulting file size. If I have a full-length movie on my computer, when I convert it for a device, I’m doing so to REDUCE it. The resulting file size should be lower, correct? Given as it’s hopefully being optimized for a smaller screen and slower processor than my laptop. However, I put a 720MB video file in the Media Converter yesterday and somehow ended up with a 774MB file. Can you explain that? Conversely, when I use something like Smartmovie Converter to put movies on my N95, a 720MB file can easily be as small as 100MB or less.
After ranting on InternetTabletTalk forums, I was linked to an app called tablet-encode. This is what seems to be an incredibly versatile converting application. It runs on any platform (Linux, Mac, Windows) and can even rip and encode DVDs in a single step. I’ll be playing with this app more and will report back soon.
In the meantime, you now have several options for converting your video files to be played back on the Tablet. Stay tuned to Tablet-Guru for a detailed comparison of the options.

I tested this before this release and it’s solid, but seems best for the right after DVD rip rather than the change format conversion.
I’d suggest Media Converter - http://mediaconverter.garage.maemo.org/Media%20Converter.html
Or handBrake - http://handbrake.m0k.org/
Have you tried a lower quality setting?
